⚠️If you advise clients on compliance, don’t get caught out on your own.⚠️

In a recent employment tribunal case, an accountancy firm dismissed an employee for online shopping at work, assuming her less than two years’ service meant they were safe.
The tribunal disagreed.
❌ The dismissal was pre-decided
❌ No proper investigation took place
❌ Policies on IT use weren’t clearly communicated
The result? £14,100 in compensation — including a 20% uplift for failing to follow the ACAS Code.
⚖️ Importantly, the judge noted that while the firm was small with limited resources, as a professional accountancy practice, it should reasonably have had greater awareness of employment law and compliance.
👉 Finance firms — tribunals may expect you to know better.
Document and investigate fairly
Ensure policies are clear and communicated
Apply proportionate sanctions
Always follow the ACAS Code
Because compliance doesn’t stop with your clients — it starts with your own business.
